If you read books on your computer using Notepad, Word, or OpenOffice books are available in plain text from Project Gutenburg. For years volunteers have been transcribing out of copyright books into digital formats.

Project Gutenberg is the place where you can download over 30,000 FREE ebooks to read on your PC, iPhone, Kindle, Sony Reader or other portable device. In addition to text the some of the books are available in PDF, ePub ((the likely electronic standard), and other reader formats. , and other reader formats. ou can also help by volunteering.

Other sources of epub formats include:

1. epubBooks provides a selection of high quality, free ePub eBooks, for everyone to read and though the collection is growing daily. Commercial and FREE!
2. Feedbooks, a place to discover and publish e-books or read some public domain books. There are likely some short stories for readers with limited time.
3. Google books, for reading books and magazines inpicture format in their own unfriendly promotional ($$$) reader.
4. Lexcycle, is pleased to offer thousands of free classics from Project Gutenberg, formatted in the industry-standard Open eBook format.
5. Munseys, is another online publisher with FREE books in a variety of formats. There are likely some short stories for readers with limited time.
6. Snee, has FREE epub children's picture books. These were created from the free books available as part of Project Gutenberg.
7. TechRepublic.com One source of FREE technology books in PDF format is TechRepublic.com. Most of the FREE books only offer one chapter of the book but the chapter is one complete subject. Sometimes the chapter is so well written and informative that you want to buy the whole book.
8. Web-Books, has FREE eBooks library containing 30+ contemporary books and 1200+ classic books. Many of them are illustrated.
