Is your home network running at peak efficiency? Try these five quick tips to improve your computer's performance and security.
Select Your Preferred Network
Make sure you always connect to the same wireless network.
Open the Network icon in your system, click the Advanced button, and
place your preferred network at the top of the list to ensure that
you connect with a proven, secure network.
Build a Firewall
Protect your network from outside sources by installing a firewall
on every computer logged on to your network. This will keep most invaders
out. To enable Windows' built-in firewall go to Control Panel > Security
Center > Windows Firewall. Ensure that the On radio button is selected
and click OK.
Avoid
Interference
Cordless phones and other devices that operate on similar frequencies
that may interfere with your network should be avoided. Most Wi-Fi
networks operate on 2.4GHz. Companies such as Uniden offer phones
that operate on a 5.8GHz frequency. Protect your system and switch
accordingly.
Disable SSID Broadcast
Tighten your home networks security by disabling the Service Set
Identifier (SSID) broadcast. The SSID is a secret key which is set
by the network administrator; it may also be set by default depending
upon the technology. Disabling this feature will deter hackers who
may be within range of your network.
Shut Down During Non-Use
Consider shutting down your network including routers when you travel or during
extended periods offline. Taking the network offline is the ultimate
form of security.
Please return frequently so you don't miss any of our free incentives.
Sincerely, D'esprit Illusoire..
